STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM

I am a motivated and enthusiastic doctoral law candidate, and I have experience in human rights research work. I am well versed in the analysis of property/land law and constitutional law and governance in Southern Africa. I have a track record of developing collaborations with a wide array of stakeholders in academia, politics and other multilateral institutions.  An ever-willing hand in the contribution towards the building of strong democratic institutions in Africa as a panacea to the instabilities plaguing the region. I hold a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws (Honors), Master of Laws, with all qualifications attained during my time at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. I am currently a part of The Free State Centre for Human Rights, a subdivision of the University of the Free State, South Africa as a final year doctoral candidate with a research interest in human rights law, private law, and constitutional property rights law. My research continues to push the boundaries, bringing to the fore, an in-depth appreciation of the complexities that lay at the intersection of private law, constitutional law and human rights law in post-colonial societies, an attribute which I hope will hold me in good stead in the years to come.

I was born in Valencia, Venezuela, and lived there until the age of 13. Spanish is my first language but I have native level English fluency. I have traveled to different places around Europe and South America. I have a strong interest in International Affairs. I was a Spanish and social studies teacher for nine years before attending law school. During my free time I love to spend time with my husband and two children, playing with my two dogs, reading, running, hiking, and camping. After law school, I hope to find a job as a criminal prosecutor.

My name is Emma McKenzie. I am currently completing my last year of a double degree, studying a Bachelor of Laws (Honors) and Bachelor of Business at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. I am extremely passionate about law and after graduation, I intend to work as a commercial solicitor. I am currently seeking opportunities in which I can gain further experience and would be honored to undertake a Student Intern role at the International Association of Law Schools (IALS). Throughout my studies, I have completed multiple legal work experience placements. Last year, I worked as part of a team of solicitors from the Legal and Integrity Unit of the Edith Cowan University Strategic and Governance Services Centre. In this role, I was responsible for completing a range of administrative tasks, such as editing legal templates, organizing and preparing documents, and electronic filing. I also conducted a number of research tasks, regarding several different areas of law. I have also completed a placement with the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre, utilizing my developed communication and interpersonal skills, to interact directly with clients, whilst working alongside the Head Solicitor. My non-legal work roles, in retail and hospitality, have also enhanced my skills in communication, problem solving, customer service and working as part of a diverse team. I have a broad range of interests, providing balance to my academic pursuits. I am a bubbly, enthusiastic person, who enjoys working as part of a team. I also have a passion for travel, with some of my fondest memories including experiencing a traditional Czech dinner in Prague and attending a schnapps tasting at a farm in Austria. I am a third-year undergraduate student at the National University of Singapore, School of Law. I am submitting this application in hope of securing an internship opportunity with the International Association of Law Schools.  As one who firmly believes in the importance of a holistic legal education and lifelong learning, I hope to gain exposure to the advancement of legal education around the world. Having benefitted from the current legal education system in Singapore, it would be an honor to play a role in the continued improvement of legal education.   I am interested in gaining international exposure, as I strongly appreciate learning about the differences in legal studies and culture between various jurisdictions. As the Vice-President (Internal) of the NUS Pro Bono Group in the Academic Year 2019/2020, I have experience in organizing regional collaborations between different law schools. Apart from being involved in the organizing of a cross-border pro bono collaboration between NUS Pro Bono Group and Thammasat University's Pro Bono Society (Thailand), I was also part of the organizing team of a Pro Bono Conference that was attended by delegates from countries in Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Considering that the IALS often convenes various meetings and discussions, I believe my skillset could be relevant and I hope to contribute to the team. A more personal motivation behind this internship application would be my desire to explore a career in a foreign jurisdiction in the future. I am currently exploring the idea of a career in Thailand in light of my partial Thai descent. The abovementioned has contributed to my interest in an international career.
